Local know-how
Seafront and town-centre car parks fill early on sunny summer days. Arrive before mid-morning or use a larger car park a short walk from the beach, and check the signs carefully - many residential streets near the cliffs have restrictions.
The chain ferry from Sandbanks to Studland is a scenic shortcut to Purbeck and charges a toll. It is sometimes out of service for maintenance, so check before relying on it; the road round via Wareham is longer.
The A338 Wessex Way is the main road in, linking with the A31 towards Ringwood, the New Forest and the M27. Expect queues on summer weekends and bank holidays, especially on hot beach days.
Purbeck and the Jurassic Coast are reached on narrow, winding roads with steep hills and sharp bends. Take it slowly, watch for cyclists and walkers, and use the proper car parks at popular spots.
