Local know-how
Bristol has a charging Clean Air Zone covering the city centre. Most hire cars meet its standards, so you're unlikely to pay, but if you're given an older vehicle, check its registration on the government's online vehicle checker.
Crossing Brunel's famous bridge over the Avon Gorge by car means paying a toll. It's worth driving once, but the best views come from walking across, so consider parking in Clifton village and strolling over the gorge instead.
Both Severn crossings, on the M4 and M48, have been toll-free since 2018. That makes Cardiff, Tintern and the Wye Valley straightforward day trips with nothing to pay on the way there or back.
Multi-storeys at Cabot Circus and around the harbourside are the simplest options, and Park & Ride buses serve the centre. The M32 and the main routes into town queue at rush hour, and the harbourside streets are busy on summer weekends.
