Local know-how
The M60 circles Greater Manchester and connects with the M56 for the airport, the M62 for Leeds and Liverpool, and the M6 for the Lake District. Its junctions are numbered clockwise from Stockport, so note yours before you set off.
Metrolink trams share several city-centre streets with other traffic, and some roads are open only to trams, buses and taxis. Bus lanes are camera-enforced, and hire companies usually pass fines on with an admin fee, so follow the signs carefully.
Manchester does not charge private cars to drive into a Clean Air Zone, so there is no daily fee for entering the centre. Congestion is the bigger issue: avoid the Mancunian Way and the M60 at peak times where you can.
Multi-storey car parks around Piccadilly, Deansgate and the Arndale are the simplest option. On-street bays are mostly Pay & Display, with time limits on the signs. On match days, streets near Old Trafford and the Etihad fill up quickly.
Get out of town
Show caves, a ruined Norman castle and the Winnats Pass road in the heart of the Peak District.
A grand National Trust house and deer park on the western edge of the Peak District.
Roman walls, the black-and-white Rows and riverside walks along the Dee.
The waterfront, world-class museums and Beatles heritage, a straight run west along the M62.
The Brontë Parsonage and a steep cobbled main street, high on the Pennine moors.
Lake cruises and fell views - a long day out, straight up the M6.
Distances are straight-line from Manchester city centre; road distances are longer.
