Desks in the centre and at Waverley are handy if you only need a car for part of your stay, though you'll start inside the Low Emission Zone and in busy traffic. The airport, west of the city, puts you close to the M8, M9 and the Forth crossing into Fife. Compare live prices for your dates before deciding.

Local know-how
Edinburgh's city-centre Low Emission Zone has been enforced since 2024, and vehicles that don't meet the standards are fined by camera. Most modern hire cars comply, but check with the supplier if you're unsure.
Central parking is limited and strictly controlled. Park & Ride sites on the edge of the city, such as Ingliston near the airport, let you leave the car and continue into town by tram or bus.
The Queensferry Crossing carries traffic north into Fife free of charge - none of Scotland's road bridges are tolled. It's the quickest route to St Andrews, Perth and the Highlands beyond.
Scotland's limit is lower than in England and Wales: 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. Even a single drink can put you close to it, so the safest rule is not to drink at all before driving.
Get out of town
The home of golf, a ruined medieval cathedral and long sandy beaches.
A royal castle on a volcanic crag, with views across to the Wallace Monument.
Giant horse-head sculptures beside the canal, with the Falkirk Wheel close by.
A seaside town with sandy bays and boat trips out to the Bass Rock.
An intricately carved 15th-century chapel, just south of the city bypass.
Romantic abbey ruins in the Scottish Borders, below the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills.
Distances are straight-line from Edinburgh city centre; road distances are longer.
