Staying in the centre? A city branch or New Street saves a trip out of town, though you'll start inside the Clean Air Zone and in busy traffic. Flying in, the airport puts you straight onto the M42 and the wider motorway network. Availability and prices change from week to week, so compare all three for your own dates.

Local know-how
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers all roads inside the A4540 Middle Ringway, but not the ring road itself. Cars that don't meet the emission standards pay a daily charge. Most modern hire cars comply, but check the registration with the online vehicle checker if unsure.
The M6, M5, M42 and M40 all meet around Birmingham. Gravelly Hill Interchange - better known as Spaghetti Junction - links the M6 with the A38(M) into the centre. Signs come up quickly, so get into the right lane early.
Heading north, the M6 Toll offers an alternative to the often congested M6 through the West Midlands. It's paid at toll plazas along the route, so keep a payment card to hand if you plan to use it.
Multi-storey car parks near the Bullring and the Mailbox are the easiest choice in the centre. On-street spaces are limited and time-restricted, so read the signs carefully before leaving the car. Big events at the city's arenas can fill central car parks early.
Get out of town
Shakespeare's birthplace, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and a lively riverside on the Avon.
A medieval fortress above the River Avon, with a historic town centre to wander.
The world's first iron bridge and a cluster of industrial heritage museums along the Severn.
Honey-stone cottages, antique shops and a hilltop tower with views over several counties.
Ridge walks along the hills, with sweeping views across Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
England's only medieval cathedral with three spires, set in a compact market town.
Distances are straight-line from Birmingham city centre; road distances are longer.
