You won't need a car to see central London - the Tube and buses do that better - but one opens up Windsor, the South Downs, the Kent coast and the Cotswolds. Compare hire cars from central branches, Victoria station and Heathrow in one search, and plan around the capital's charging zones before you set off.

Collecting in central London suits a short trip out of town, but you'll start in slow traffic and inside the Congestion Charge zone. Victoria is handy if you're arriving by train from Gatwick or the south coast. Heathrow puts you on the M4 and M25 almost at once. Prices and fleets shift with the dates, so compare all three before you book.

Local know-how
Central London has a daily Congestion Charge during set hours. There are no booths: cameras read number plates and you pay online with Transport for London. The charge is your responsibility, not the hire company's, and unpaid penalties are usually passed on with an admin fee.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs. Most hire cars meet its standards, so there's normally nothing extra to pay, but if you're given an older vehicle, check its registration on the TfL website before you drive.
The M25 crossing of the Thames between Essex and Kent has no barriers. Pay the Dart Charge online by midnight the day after you cross, or a penalty notice will be sent to the hire company - and then on to you.
Parking in central London is scarce and expensive, and many streets are for residents only. Book a car park in advance or leave the car at your hotel. Cross-town journeys are slow at most times of day, so allow plenty of time to reach the motorways.
Get out of town
The castle, the Long Walk and Eton across the river, just off the M4.
Pier, Lanes and seafront, with the South Downs on the drive down.
White chalk cliffs, a pebbly beach and breezy clifftop walks on the Sussex coast.
Dreaming spires, college quads, museums and riverside pubs, straight up the M40.
Punting on the Cam and college chapels, an easy run up the M11.
The prehistoric stone circle on Salisbury Plain - a full but rewarding day out.
Distances are straight-line from London city centre; road distances are longer.
