Local know-how
Glasgow's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre and is enforced by cameras. Vehicles that don't meet the standards face penalties; most recent hire cars comply, but ask the supplier if you're in any doubt.
The M8 runs right through central Glasgow and over the Kingston Bridge, with junctions close together and exits on both sides. Plan your exit in advance and expect queues at rush hour.
In the Highlands and on the islands, many roads are single-track with passing places. Pull into one on your left to let oncoming traffic by - or wait opposite one on your right - and let faster cars overtake.
As everywhere in Scotland, the limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, lower than in England. Police run regular checks, so it's best to avoid alcohol altogether when you're driving.
Get out of town
A pretty conservation village on the loch's western shore, with a pier and lochside beach.
Gateway town for lochs, forest drives and gentle hill walks in the national park.
A Georgian town and castle on Loch Fyne, reached over the Rest and Be Thankful pass.
Scotland's most famous glen, with towering mountain scenery on the road to Fort William.
A clifftop Robert Adam castle on the Ayrshire coast, set in a large country park.
A restored 18th-century mill village beside the Falls of Clyde, a World Heritage Site.
