City, St Davids or airport?

Many of Exeter's branches are on the Marsh Barton estate south-west of the centre, while others operate from the airport close to junction 29 of the M5. St Davids is the main station for trains from London and Bristol. The best value can move between the three with your dates, so compare before you book.

Local know-how

Driving in Exeter

Where the M5 ends

The M5 finishes at Exeter, where the A30 continues west to Cornwall and the A38 heads for Plymouth. Summer Saturdays bring heavy holiday traffic on all three, so set off early if you can.

Dartmoor and Devon lanes

Many Devon lanes are single-track, with high hedges and passing places. On Dartmoor, ponies, sheep and cattle graze unfenced land right beside the road. Slow down, and be ready to reverse to a passing place.

Park & Ride

Park & Ride sites on the edge of Exeter are the easiest way into the centre. City-centre car parks are within walking distance of the cathedral and shops, but they fill up on Saturdays and during the school holidays.

Rush hour

Junctions around the M5, Marsh Barton and the river crossings into the centre are busy at peak times. Allow extra time if you're returning the car before a train or a flight, and avoid the school run where possible.

Good questions

Car hire in Exeter - FAQ

All questions
How much does car hire in Exeter cost?

In our search on 2 November 2026 for a 7-day hire, the cheapest car was a mini at £131.56 (about £18.79 a day) at Exeter Airport (EXT), and the average quote there was £290.03. Prices change with the season and how early you book - search your dates to see live prices.

Should I collect at the airport, in the city or at St Davids?

Fly in and the airport is simplest, with the M5 close by. Arriving by train, St Davids saves a taxi ride. City branches suit a car for part of your stay. Compare all three - prices change with the dates.

Is Exeter a good base for Cornwall?

It's a handy starting point. The A30 runs west from the city into Cornwall, so you can reach the north coast and beyond in a day, though a longer stay further west saves on driving.

What should I know about driving on Dartmoor?

Roads cross open moorland where ponies, sheep and cattle roam freely, and some lanes are narrow with few passing places. Drive slowly, never feed the animals, and take extra care in mist or after dark.

Where can I park in Exeter?

Park & Ride is the easiest choice for sightseeing. If you'd rather drive in, central car parks are close to the cathedral and Princesshay, but expect them to be busy on Saturdays and in school holidays.

Can I return the car in Cornwall?

Yes. Tick "Return to a different location" in the search to compare one-way prices to Newquay Airport, Bristol or anywhere else in the UK. A one-way fee may apply.
