Oxford's colleges are best explored on foot, but the city sits on the doorstep of the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace and the Thames valley. Compare car hire in Oxford itself, at the railway station and at Heathrow, then head out along the A40, the A34 or the M40.

Oxford's rental branches are mostly on the west side of the city, close to the railway station, so city and station pick-ups are often only a short distance apart. Heathrow is worth checking if you're flying in and want the car straight away. Prices and fleets at each point change with your dates - compare them side by side.

Local know-how
Oxford runs a Zero Emission Zone in part of the city centre, where vehicles that aren't zero-emission are charged. Check the council's current map before heading in - with a petrol or hybrid hire car, it's simpler to avoid the area altogether.
Parking in the centre is limited and expensive. Park & Ride sites around the ring road are the easiest way in: leave the car and take the bus to the colleges, museums and shops. Check the last bus back if you're staying for the evening.
Several central streets are open only to buses, taxis and bikes, and are enforced by camera. Fines go to the hire company, which will pass them on. Follow the signs carefully and give the city's many cyclists plenty of room.
The ring road links the A34 north and south, the A40 west towards the Cotswolds and the M40 for London and Birmingham. The ring road and the A34 queue at rush hour, so plan departures for mid-morning if you can.
Get out of town
Churchill's birthplace, a vast baroque palace set in landscaped parkland at Woodstock.
A sloping honey-stone high street that makes a gentle start to the Cotswolds.
Designer outlet shopping a short drive north of the city, with parking on site.
Shakespeare's birthplace and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre beside the River Avon.
Riverside walks, boat hire and the famous regatta stretch of the Thames.
A prehistoric chalk figure on the downs, beside the ancient Ridgeway path.
Distances are straight-line from Oxford city centre; road distances are longer.
