Local know-how
Driving in Aberdeen
Low Emission Zone
Aberdeen's city-centre Low Emission Zone has been enforced since 2024. Vehicles that don't meet the standards are fined by camera; most modern hire cars comply, but confirm with your supplier if you're unsure.
The Western Peripheral Route
The A90 Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route bypasses the city, linking the airport, the A96 towards Inverness and the A90 south to Dundee. It's usually quicker to go around Aberdeen than through it.
Mountain roads
Routes into the Cairngorms, such as the A93 over the Cairnwell Pass and the A939 past the Lecht, are among the highest roads in Britain and can close in snow. Check conditions before setting out in winter.
Scotland's 50 mg limit
The drink-drive limit here is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, lower than in England. Driving the morning after can also put you over, so plan ahead after an evening of whisky tasting.

Where do I collect a hire car at Aberdeen Airport?
Most companies work from the car rental centre at the airport in Dyce. Your voucher shows the exact pick-up point and what to do if your flight is delayed.
Does Aberdeen have a Low Emission Zone?
Yes. It covers part of the city centre and has been enforced since 2024. Most modern hire cars meet the standards; if you're not sure, ask the supplier before driving into the zone.
Is a car worth it for Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms?
Definitely. Public transport is limited beyond the main valleys, and a car lets you combine castles, distilleries and viewpoints in one day. Allow extra time on winding roads.
Can I drive the North East 250 from Aberdeen?
Yes - the North East 250 touring route passes close to the city and takes in Royal Deeside, Speyside and the coast. Allow several days, and check conditions on the high stretches in winter.
Can I return the car in Inverness?
Yes. Tick "Return to a different location" and enter Inverness Airport to compare one-way rentals along the A96. A one-way fee may apply, so check the total price.
