Picking up in Gloucester makes sense if you're already in the county or arriving by train. Bristol Airport, south of Bristol, is the closest major airport to most of Gloucestershire and suits travellers flying in. Prices and choice vary with the dates, so compare both - Cheltenham and Cirencester are worth a search too.

Local know-how
Many Cotswold roads are narrow and twisting, lined with dry-stone walls, and some stretches are single-track. Drive slowly, give way at passing places and watch for cyclists and horse riders on quiet lanes.
The M5 runs north - south through the county, linking Gloucester and Cheltenham with Bristol and Birmingham. The A417 heads east to Cirencester, while the A40 crosses the Cotswolds towards Oxford. Expect holiday traffic on the M5 on summer weekends.
Cheltenham Racecourse draws huge crowds, especially during the March Festival. Expect heavy traffic around Cheltenham on race days, allow plenty of time and book parking ahead if you're going yourself.
Both Severn bridges into South Wales have been toll-free since 2018, so Cardiff, Chepstow and the Wye Valley make easy days out from the south of the county. The older bridge carries the M48 near Chepstow; the Prince of Wales Bridge carries the M4.
Get out of town
Low stone bridges over the River Windrush, often called the Venice of the Cotswolds.
Arlington Row's weavers' cottages, one of the most photographed scenes in the Cotswolds.
A huge Norman abbey and timber-framed streets where the Severn meets the Avon.
A viewpoint high above a loop of the River Wye, on the edge of the Forest of Dean.
Wetland reserve on the Severn estuary, known for its winter swans and geese.
Roman baths, Georgian crescents and golden stone streets, reached via the southern Cotswolds.
Distances are straight-line from Gloucestershire city centre; road distances are longer.
