Cambridge is a city of bikes and footpaths, so you won't want a car in the centre. Beyond it, though, lie Ely, the Suffolk wool towns and the wide skies of the Fens. Compare hire cars in Cambridge and at Stansted, the nearest major airport, in a single search.

Most of Cambridge's rental branches sit on the edge of the centre, around Newmarket Road and Chesterton, which keeps you clear of the busiest streets. Stansted is a quick run down the M11 and suits travellers flying in. Which comes out ahead depends on your dates and the car you need, so compare both before you book.

Local know-how
Much of the historic core is closed to through traffic, with camera-enforced bus gates and some streets open only to buses, taxis, bikes and permit holders. Fines go to the hire company and come back to you, so follow the signs or stay out.
Park & Ride sites ring the city and are the easiest way to reach the colleges. Central multi-storeys such as Grand Arcade are convenient for shopping but fill up quickly at weekends and during the busy summer months.
Cycling is a way of life in Cambridge, for students and residents alike. Check your mirrors before turning, give bikes plenty of room when overtaking and watch for riders emerging from side streets, college gates and shared paths.
The M11 runs south to Stansted and London, and the A14 links Cambridge with the Midlands and the Suffolk coast at Felixstowe. Both the A14 and the city's ring road get busy at peak times.
Get out of town
The great cathedral known as the Ship of the Fens, above a small market city.
Historic aircraft in vast hangars at the Imperial War Museum's airfield, just south of Cambridge.
A grand Jacobean mansion with landscaped parkland and a working Victorian kitchen garden.
A Suffolk wool town of crooked timber-framed houses and a magnificent church.
Wild fenland, boardwalks and grazing ponies on a National Trust nature reserve.
Abbey ruins and gardens, a cathedral and handsome Georgian streets in the heart of Suffolk.
Distances are straight-line from Cambridge city centre; road distances are longer.
