Newcastle's Quayside and lively centre are best enjoyed on foot, but Northumberland's castles, Hadrian's Wall and a long, empty coastline really call for a car. Compare hire in the city centre, at Central Station and at Newcastle International Airport side by side, and head north or west with the right deal.
Rail travellers can walk from the platform to rental desks at or near Central Station, while city branches suit a pick-up partway through a stay. The airport lies on the north-western edge of the city, well placed for Northumberland. Which option works out cheapest depends on your dates, so compare all three live.

Local know-how
Driving in Newcastle
Tyne Tunnel toll
The Tyne Tunnel between North and South Tyneside is tolled but has no barriers. Pay online by midnight the day after you travel - unpaid tolls lead to penalty charges, which hire firms usually pass on with an admin fee.
The A1 and A19
The A1 Western Bypass carries north - south traffic around Newcastle and Gateshead, while the A19 runs through the Tyne Tunnel to the east. Both get busy at rush hour, particularly near the Metrocentre.
Parking
Multi-storey car parks serve Eldon Square, the Quayside and the area around the station. Some central streets are pedestrianised or reserved for buses, so follow the signs to a car park rather than hunting for a space on the street.
Rural Northumberland
Beyond the city, roads quickly turn rural: lanes near Hadrian's Wall and along the coast are narrow in places, with farm traffic and sheep. Fuel stations are few and far between in the north-west of the county, so fill up first.

How much does car hire in Newcastle upon Tyne cost?
In our search on 2 November 2026 for a 7-day hire, the cheapest car was a mini at £54.02 (about £7.72 a day) at Newcastle Airport (NCL), and the average quote there was £276.28. Prices change with the season and how early you book - search your dates to see live prices.
How do I pay the Tyne Tunnel toll in a hire car?
Pay online using the car's registration number by midnight the day after crossing, or ask the supplier how tolls are handled. Late payment brings a penalty, usually passed on to you with an admin charge.
Is Central Station a good place to pick up?
Yes, if you arrive by train: several brands have desks at or very close to the station. City traffic can be slow, though, so allow time to reach the A1 at busy periods.
Do I need a car in Newcastle itself?
Not really - the Metro, buses and walking cover the centre and the coast. Hire a car for days out to Northumberland, Hadrian's Wall or the Durham Dales, where public transport is limited.
Which airports are near Newcastle?
Newcastle International Airport, on the north-western edge of the city, is the closest. Teesside International Airport, near Darlington, is the other option and covers the south of the region.
Can I drive to Edinburgh and drop the car there?
Yes. Tick "Return to a different location" and enter Edinburgh to compare one-way prices - the A1 links the two cities via the Northumberland coast. A one-way fee may apply.
