Alamo, Drivalia, Enterprise, National
York's city and station branches suit visitors arriving by train on the East Coast main line, and put the Moors and the coast within easy reach. Leeds Bradford Airport, north-west of Leeds, is better placed for the Dales and West Yorkshire. Prices vary by location and date, so compare all three before booking.

Local know-how
York's walled centre has narrow streets, pedestrian zones and limited parking. The Park & Ride sites around the outer ring road are the easiest way in - leave the car and take the bus to the centre.
Country roads in the national parks are often narrow and walled, with blind bends, sheep and tractors. Take your time, use passing places on single-track stretches and park only in proper laybys or car parks.
Some moorland roads are very steep - Sutton Bank on the A170 near Thirsk is a well-known example and is unsuitable for caravans. Use a low gear on the way down rather than riding the brakes.
The A1(M) runs north - south through the county and the M62 crosses it east - west; both are busy at peak times. The A64 links Leeds with York and Scarborough and can be slow on summer weekends.
